Allison Toffan
Allison Toffan is a Toronto based tap dancer and choreographer. A graduate of the Music Theatre - Performance program at Sheridan College, she also has an extensive background in theatre. Professionally she has been a principle dancer with Turn On The Tap, a collective of dancers and musicians under the direction of Paula Skimin, since October of 2002. Allison's involvement in the company has provided her with the opportunity to perform in various venues throughout Ontario, as well as develop her musicianship through consistently working with live music.
In addition to Turn on The Tap, selected credits include choreography/performance for Good Place For a Factory!, (2009 Toronto Fringe Festival) direction/choreography for What a Swell Party This Is, (Sunshine & Company) Toe Jamm, (2006 Edmonton Fringe Festival) and choreography/performance for The Who's Tommy, In Concert. ( Platinum Theatre Co.) Most recently, she had the incredible opportunity to perform as a principle tap dancer in the 2010 Winter Olympic Opening Ceremonies.
Allison regularly travels to NYC to study with some of the world's most revered tap dancers. In 2009, she received a grant to dance professionals from the Canada Council For The Arts in the emerging artist category. This provided her with the opportunity to live in New York, study privately with Brenda Bufalino, Heather Cornell, tap dancer/body percussionist Max Pollak, and drummer Dan Weiss, and develop her voice within the international tap community.
Allison has been on the dance faculty at Sheridan College, and has been a guest choreographer and teacher for dance schools in Toronto, Edmonton, and Vancouver. As a tap dancer/percussionist, she is a band member of The Samba Punk Soundsystem, and The Woodchoppers Association, and has been a guest artist with the Grifflth-Hiltz Trio, The Roaring Girl Cabaret, The Sly Juhas Quintet, Le Collective, Laska Sawade, and Trevor Campbell's Pub Session series.
Allison! has been making strides as a solo tap artist and feels fortunate to be consistently working with some of Toronto's top jazz musicians, songwriters, and spoken word artists, furthering her musical education and true appreciation for her craft. Allison is a presence within the Toronto jazz scene, continues to collaborate with tap dancers across Canada, and is actively progressing her mission to bridge together the gap between tap dance and jazz music.
